Small business of the year: Top Speed Data
March 15, 2006

Top Speed Data president Anthy O'Brien has a simple reason why she gives so much back to the community.
"I'm hooked," she said. "I love it."
The company is being honored as Small Business of the Year at the Petaluma Community Recognition Awards dinner at the Sheraton Sonoma County-Petaluma on March 24. This is the fourth year for the awards, which are given by the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce and the Argus-Courier.
Local organizations that have benefited from the organization's volunteer efforts and donations include Petaluma People Services Center, the Casa Grande High School mentoring program, Leukemia Foundation, Hospice of Petaluma, National Kidney Foundation, Petaluma Youth Soccer, United Anglers of Casa Grande, American Lung Association and Canine Companions.
O'Brien said that the satisfaction and rewards of giving back to the community more than compensate for the efforts of volunteering.
"You start out thinking you're going to be doing all this good stuff, and in the end you find that you get so much back you think, 'Oh, maybe it was about me,'" she said.
One recent rewarding experience was organizing the first Hospice Walk for Hospice of Petaluma last fall, where volunteers handed out information door to door. O'Brien said it was a lot of work organizing the effort, but, "In the end you start walking yourself, and it's really great. People are so happy to get the information, and you hear stories about how Hospice helped them."
But it's not just O'Brien or co-founder and vice president of sales Glenn Illian who volunteer in the community. Most employees do so as well.
"Everyone who works here sort of has the same beliefs, and it's wonderful," said O'Brien. "We do two things, almost all of use volunteer for something, and we all try to go to the gym to keep our sanity."
Top Speed is a hands-on independent telephone company broker that helps businesses find the best voice, data and wireless packages from the various carriers, whether Sprint, AT&T or even smaller providers. O'Brien and Illian have been running it since 2002.
For O'Brien, she also got a lot from the leukemia Foundation's Team in Training. She participated in a century ride, or 100-mile bike ride in Lake Tahoe, raising $6 thousand. Preparation for the ride took five months.
"It was an experience of a lifetime," she said. "It changed my life. Just the whole feeling of what you were doing for medical research and for the people that really needed you and the group of volunteers are just fabulous."
How does she do all the volunteer work and still have enough energy to run a successful business?
"I think the more you do, the more energized you get," O'Brien said. "If everyone in this town knew what you got out of what you get for giving, everyone would give something."

TELECOM & BIOTECHNOLOGY: Telecom services broker Top Speed growing
With 20 percent growth Petaluma company courts banks, retailers
By Loralee Stevens, STAFF REPORTER
PETALUMA – Top Speed Data Communications is gathering momentum as carriers rush to offer advanced voice and data services to business customers.
The independent network and services broker in Petaluma is having a banner year according to co-founder and President Anthy O’Brien.
Ms. O’Brien and her partner Glenn Illian, veterans of Pacific Bell and AT&T respectively, built a data circuit design and ordering service for businesses. But the company has evolved into a master agency, brokering wired and wireless services to a national network of outside subagents as well as its own customers.
Top Speed has enjoyed a steady 20 percent annual growth rate for the past several years. The eight-employee company had $2 million in revenues last year, a number that’s expected to jump as several large retail chain and banking customers come online.
"We’re really expanding in the areas of banking and finance, insurance, restaurant chains and retail,” said Ms. O’Brien. She just signed one of the nation’s largest drug chains, whose policy prevents her from naming it, and a sizable Bay Area staffing firm.
Local customers include Bank of Marin, the Redwood Credit Union and Lanahan & Reilley in Sonoma County and the Doctor’s Company in Napa.
Top Speed’s revenues come from its carrier partners.
It’s authorized to broker the services of the ACC, AT&T, Sprint, Global Crossing and about 25 other major incumbent and competitive carriers. The company also partners with local wireless access provider Vista Broadband.
Carrier consolidation has worked in Top Speed’s favor.
"When SBC acquired AT&T, they closed down their regional sales teams to go after the big, global customers,” said Top Speed account executive Allan Jaffe. "Suddenly long-term, loyal SBC customers were calling us up.
"When Verizon merged with MCI it caused mass confusion, which also sent customers our way. And when Nextel and Sprint got together they created some great new products for us to market," he said.
Top Speed isn’t the only broker, but it has differentiated itself by working directly with customers or with its 20 subagents and by evaluating a company's needs.
"Sometimes we see right away where they can lower costs or improve quality, sometimes not. But most master agents like Top Speed work with the customer only through subagents. Those agents are one step removed from the customer,” said Ms. O’Brien.
Carriers often require brokers to undergo 40 to 50 hours of training in a new service offering.
“They love us because we jump right in.”
An AT&T channel-partner spokesman said Top Speed has a deeper knowledge of the telecommunications industry than most agents.
“They go after full network monitoring. ... Many of our channel partners just understand the lower end of services," he said.
AT&T is expanding its channel program following the merger with SBC, he said.
Top Speed has expertise in voice over Internet protocol and wireless local area networks, which are increasingly popular among businesses with multiple locations. The company is also providing advanced point of sale services, video surveillance and Wi-Fi.
"Converged networks are a big growth trend. Businesses want to send voice, video and data over a single pipe to 40 locations. One of our new customers has 400 sites,” said Ms. O’Brien.
Top Speed has about 500 customers, most of them its own, despite its small staff. The company recently partnered with Quest, a Sacramento reseller of Cisco equipment, and Calence, another reseller in Phoenix.
